Andrew Shield has been living on the Gold Coast since 1984 and shooting surf photos professionally since 1997.
After a stint in the film and television industry straight out of school, Shieldsy succumbed to his passion for travel and photography and hit the open toad. After an extended surf trip through Indonesia in 1995 he sent some of his images to Surfing Life magazine, where photo editor Lee Pegus immediately recognised a significant talent worth nurturing and published some of his images. Encouraged by the positive feedback, Shieldsy embarked on the path of a freelance surf photographer and became Surfing Life senior photographer in 2005. He enjoys a close working relationship with many of the best pro surfers on the Gold Coast and can always be counted on to know where and when the waves will be firing. Whether from land, water, the back of a jetski or with the aid of a drone, Shieldsy is considered one of the best and most versatile surf photographers in the country, equally adept at surf action, landscape, portrait and lifestyle photography. He has also been resident surf photographer at various Indonesian surf resorts, shooting their guests in perfect waves.
