Brown Cannon Photographer

BROWN W. CANNON III began his photographic journey in his parents’ darkroom over 40 years ago.

He studied at the Art Center College of
Design in Pasadena California and hit the ground running in the Fall of
1999.

Brown has traveled to more than 50 countries photographing awardwinning
stories for editorial and commercial clients including Travel &
Leisure, Conde Nast, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, GEO
Saison and Copalli Rum. Passionate for culture, adventure and
conservation, Brown has camped in the Empty Quarter and been diving
with Great White Sharks in Guadalupe, Mexico. He has ridden 120 miles
on horseback through the Mongolian Steppe with the Altai Mountain
Eagle Hunters and has sailed through the Arctic Glaciers of Svalbard. But
when asked, “Where is the one place on Earth that resonates more with
him than any other?” He answers unequivocally, “the Seven Mile Miracle
known as the North Shore of Oahu.”

Cannon’s photography has been exhibited in solo and group gallery shows
in galleries and museums in California, Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico,
South Carolina, New York and Hawaii, and is in numerous private
collections. In 2009 Brown Co-Founded Intersection Photos, a boutique
travel stock photography company. In 2018 he founded no2plastic.org, a
nonprofit dedicated to reducing single-use plastics for the benefit of
human and planet health. His new book NORTH is a portrait of the North
Shore of Oahu and was released by Damiani October 2023. Brown divides
his time between Oregon and Hawaii. www.cannonphotography.com

Masters Image:

This image titled, “EDDIE OPENING CEREMONY, 2019, NORTH” features Mark Healey, Kohl Christensen and his daughter Mehana. They are part of the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational paddle out in 2019 which celebrates the beginning of the waiting period for the prestigious big wave event. The greatest big wave surfers in the world join hands with one another to summon future giant swells. The image was selected from my recently published book NORTH which features nearly 100 b&w portraits of North Shore watermen and women which sit side by side with action packed images of these same surfers racing down the faces of 40ft waves.
