Peter ‘Joli’ Wilson has been shooting surfing photos since 1972 and working as a globe-trotting, freelance surf photographer since 1989.
Along the way, he has scored dozens of magazine covers, contributed to hundreds of surfing and outdoors publications around the world and twice won the Australian Surf Photo of the Year Award. Joli got his start in photography working as an assistant to an exacting German mentor, provided a solid technical grounding. He helped launch Victorian surf magazine Backdoor, worked as head photographer at Deakin University, then landed a job as Advertising and Promotions Manager for Quiksilver. In 1989, together with his wife Jan, they formed Joli Productions, a play on his grandparents’ surname, given a French twist, documenting not just surfing but the culture, lifestyle, landscapes and characters that make the sport so rich. They have created one of the world’s largest, on-line surf photo archives and continue to travel the world working with the world best surfers and leading brands. Based on the Gold Coast since 1992, Joli and Jan follow a seasonal migration taking in Hawaii, Fiji, Europe, Australia, Tahiti, and anywhere great waves can be found.
