Come early, grab your spot on the grass and ease into the evening with live music as golden hour does its thing. Then, as darkness falls, settle in for a hand-picked lineup of films that will take you far beyond Gold Coast’s shores, no passport required.
Some of this year’s unforgettable journeys include the Gold Coast Premieres of:
Beyond Borders Patagonia
Jed Fasso
Beyond Borders Patagonia is an exploration of Chile’s wild frontiers. A journey rooted in Chilean culture, perfect waves, snow-capped peaks and barren deserts. The film follows surfer and filmmaker Jed Fasso alongside a closeknit crew of cinematographers, surfers and snowboarders as they push deep into Patagonia. All chasing a shared dream: to discover a new wave and a hidden mountain in the Andes.
With no blueprint and no guarantee of outcome, the journey is a testament to wild adventure, and a reminder that stepping into the unknown can unlock an incredible world of stories, challenges, and a deeper sense of who we are.
The Beyond Borders crew will be in attendance for a special post-screening Q&A panel.
Haus Tumbuna
Matty Hannon
Haus Tumbuna is a socially engaged documentary film set in Ulingan Bay, Papua New Guinea that folls the establishment of a self-sustaining, culturally specific timber surfboard factory within the local community. The project aims to decolonize cultural impact, foster cultural revival, support healing, and highlight the connection between community, culture, spirit and the natural world through the sustainable practice of building traditional ocean-going craft.
Nothing But Blue
Sebastian Bechtel
This short film about German Olympic surfer Tim Elter follows him on a journey to quench his uncompromising passion for tube riding. Far from competitions and podiums, the film paints an intimate portrait of a young elite athlete searching not only for freedom in the rush of the waves but also for himself. On a spontaneous trip to Ireland, Tim takes on the infamous wave “Aileen’s” and reveals a side of himself that is vulnerable, reflective, and driven by a paradoxical addiction to danger.
Plus a score of short films exploring wild landscapes, heavy water and deeply human stories to showcase surf filmmaking at its most expansive and inspiring.
