This is where the future of surf storytelling takes the spotlight. (Surf) Girls On Film is a high-energy celebration of women shaping surf culture, both in front of and behind the lens.
Expect a powerful mix of international short films, striking photo projections, and real conversations with the creatives and athletes driving a new wave of representation in the ocean. Hosted by surf journalist and Bikini Collective author Kate McMahon, the night brings together leading female photographers, filmmakers and surfers to unpack the evolution of women’s surf media and where it’s heading next. From jaw-dropping an inspiring films, through to panels packed with perspective you won’t hear anywhere else.
Experience the first-ever screening of a new film featuring Lilliana Bowery — a return to the roots of surfing, stripping everything back to what matters most: fun. Centered around exploring a variety of crafts – from longboards to shortboards, twin fins to guns and everything else in-between, it celebrates how each board brings a unique rhythm and feeling. At its heart, the film is about rediscovering the joy of surfing: removing pressure and embracing play. It aims to inspire female surfers to step beyond a single-board identity – to experiment, explore, and realise you can surf anything, as long as you just get out there and try.
Set in the small New Zealand coastal town of Riverton, this documentary follows three generations of the Pou family women. A powerful story of connection, culture and healing, it explores how surfing is passed down and redefined across generations and the evolving place of women in the lineup.
Set against the raw beauty of Australia’s Northern Rivers and Gold Coast coastlines, To My Home Break… is a 3 and a half minute experimental surf documentary that drifts between surfing, place, and identity. Captured predominantly on Super 8 film, it follows long-boarder, Taylah McKenzie, as she glides through her home breaks, exploring her connection to place and herself. With reflective interviews and textured analogue visuals, To My Home Break… immerses viewers in the soulful rhythm of Australian surf culture to show how the ocean can become both canvas and mirror.
A powerful short film following ocean photographer Be Ryder as she prepares to capture one of the most important events in sports history. Set against the raw beauty of Teahupo’o, it explores what it means to fall in love with something unfamiliar and pursue it with everything you have. Breathe was created to encourage women to break boundaries and follow their passion, no matter how unfamiliar the path may seem.
