MORING SURF CHECK BY SEAN SCOTT
LOCATION: BURLEIGH POINT
DATE: July 1, 2019
As the sun rises over the Pacific Ocean and surfers are drawn to coastal car parks and headlands to appraise conditions, this is what we all hope for. The first light of the new day bathing the ocean in a heavenly glow, ruler-edged lines of swell stacked to the horizon and waves funnelling down perfectly groomed sand banks, a light offshore wind sending plumes of sea spray arcing through the dawn light. Surfers will stand and stare in awe, transfixed, before springing into action. Car spaces soon become hotly contested, even before the perils of the rock jump and paddle out are navigated.
There are few places better to stare out over a pumping Pacific Ocean than Burleigh point. Photographer Sean Scott recalls: “Up early to shoot the solid swell predicted to hit. Parked further back in the car park and climbed on top on my car to frame the iconic Burleigh Barrel with the dawn crew that were there to enjoy watching the swell role in.”
