PURPLE HAZE BY FRAN MILLER
SURFER: IVY THOMAS
LOCATION: GREENMOUNT
DATE: 2017
Fran Miller’s work veers more towards fine art than traditional surf photography but as a keen lifelong surfer she can’t resist training her lens on the waves of her Gold Coast home, but with a fresh and creative perspective. An otherwise unremarkable day of small waves becomes a blaze of colour as the sun sets over Rainbow Bay and local longboarder Ivy Thomas casually cross steps through a purple sea.
Fran is one of the few female surf photographers on the Gold Coast and her work has been widely exhibited at arts festivals and galleries and hangs in private collections in New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Sydney. “Instinctively I enjoy taking photographs that leave the viewer with more questions than answers,” she says. “I am a surfer and I am passionate about the ocean, but I crave creating pieces that explore moods and feelings rather than being solely documentative, whilst still using surfing and the ocean as my medium.”
Even the world’s best don’t mind a log slide at Greeny. Josh Kerr having fun on a typically dreamy little Greeny day.
